conversation. As they approached the monastery, the crowd

collected from all parts; as the carriage stopped before the

walls, the heart of Gertrude beat more rapidly: they alighted

amidst the concourse; all eyes were fastened on her, and

compelled her to study the movements of her countenance; and,

above all, those of her father, upon whom she could not help

fixing her regards, notwithstanding the fear he inspired. They
